The River

In 2010 a photo called "Holding corpse for money" won the prestigious "Golden Lens Award" in the category best news photography in China. The photo shows a fisherman standing on his boat holding the arm of a dead body while negotiating with the relatives of the victim. Three young college students jumped into the fast moving Yangtze River to save two drowning children, and ended up drowning in the process while the children survived. The relatives had to pay the fishermen to get the bodies back. I felt very strongly seeing this photo and when I heard the story. It gave me the inspiration for this film project.

The film does not pass any moral judgments, but tells a story about this terrible event, revealing the underlying social causes and depicting the complexity of human predicament and human nature.

The film will be shot in a village called Mudong in China, in the spring of 2012.
